Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is A national "double first-class" construction university and A Class A construction university in Jiangsu High Level University Construction Peak plan. Born to serve the needs of new China's national strategy and economic construction, the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University (the predecessor of Nanjing University) was founded in 1960 under the former Central Meteorological Bureau (CMC). In 1963, it was independently established as Nanjing Institute of Meteorology. In 1978, it was listed as a national key University and transferred to the administration of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government in 2000. 2004 It was renamed Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. Since 2007, the university has been jointly built by Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, China Meteorological Administration, Ministry of Education and State Oceanic Administration. It is now a university jointly built by the central government and local government under the administration of Jiangsu Province.

The main campus of the university is located in Jiangbei New District of Nanjing, covering an area of more than 2000 mu. Jinniu Lake Industry and Education Integration Park is located in Jinniu Lake New District, Tianchang City, adjacent to Liuhe District, Nanjing City. Wuxi Campus is located in Xidong New Town, Wuxi City. There are Binjiang College (now transformed into Wuxi College), Wuxi Graduate Joint Training Base of SMU, Wuxi Research Institute and Wuxi School of National Education on Wuxi Campus. In Nanjing Jiangbei New District, Liuhe District, Yuhuatai District has a university science and technology park and cultural tourism park. There are about 35,800 full-time students in the university, including 28,300 undergraduates, 6200 postgraduate students and 1300 international students (degree students).
